I know, some of you are thinking that reading and pleasure don't go together. I encourage you to keep looking for the right book/author. Once you find it, you'll be hooked. But how does reading something for fun fit with 'learning and preparing for the future'? Reading is a skill and like any skill, you get better with practice. The more you read, the better you get at it and the easier it becomes. Along the way, you pick up tons of vocabulary and background knowledge. Vocabulary and background knowledge make reading and understanding even easier, which is great. But it also helps you do better on tests, like the ACT. In an earlier post (9/14), I shared some of John Baylor's thoughts about how much students should be reading. According to him, reading is the best way to improve your score on all portions of the test. Try for a book a month this summer. You'll be glad you did.
Job shadowing is a great way to learn about careers you are interested in. At its most basic, you follow a person, who is working in the job you are interested in, through a day, or 1/2 day. You get a chance to see what the job really entails and have an opportunity to ask questions. This gives you first hand information about working in this field. If you do more than one, you can compare how the different environments influence the work.
So what if you find out the job wasn't really what you thought it would be or it doesn't fit you? That's good information to have now rather than later, don't you think? School may be out for the summer, but opportunities for learning and preparing for your future never take a break. If fact, this could be the optimal time to job shadow, volunteer, try a new hobby, or catch up on your reading. Any and all of these can help you prepare for your future now.
