Sports and College
If you are thinking about competing in a sport while you go to college, there are several things you need to know and take care of. For participation in Division I or II athletics, the NCAA requires that you register with them to verify that you are eligible to participate.
Eligibility includes your status as an amateur in the sport, and your academic status in meeting at least minimum GPA and ACT standards. These standards are higher than you might think and the focus is on grades in your core subjects (English, math, science).
The CollegeBoard has a page of frequently asked questions about the process. This is a good place to start putting together information. You can use the link to the Eligibility Center on the left menu bar to get started.
This process should be started early in high school, however, there is no deadline other than it has to be completed prior to being able to participate in college athletics.
