The Nebraska State Board of Education adopted the following as the definition of career readiness for Nebraska students.
"A career ready person capitalizes on personal strengths, talents, education and experiences to bring value to the workplace and the community through his/her performance, skill, diligence, ethics and responsible behavior." This definition helps shed light on why it doesn't work to use just tests and grades as measures of career or college readiness. Next post, we'll start looking at the standards Nebraska has developed to guide schools in the preparation of College and Career Ready students.
We hear a lot about the importance of College and Career Readiness. It is vitally important, but what is it really?
We often get caught up in GPA's and ACT scores and assume that any kid who has a high GPA and good, or even great, ACT score is ready for success in college or a job. Unfortunately, those measures don't necessarily tell us what we need to know about 'Readiness'. To know that, we need to look at the bigger picture.
